STORYLAND YOGA Review and Giveaway

It's seems like in today's culture it is quite difficult to engage children in exercise.  With gaming systems, cell phones, iTouches, iPhones, Vtech electronics, kids are pulled in many directions, but outside is not one of them.  I am always looking for ways for Sophia to get some exercise.  Nate and I have been taking her running with us (in a stroller of course) since she was 2 months old.  We desire for her to know our family likes to stay healthy together and it takes each one of us.

In the winter months in the Midwest, it is hard to get outside and run around.  Finding fun activites to do inside are crucial for a stay-at-home mom (and her sanity!) Hahaha!

Karen over at Playful Planet sent me a copy of Storyland Yoga to review.  It is a little advanced for Sophia; as you can see below it suggests ages 3-8.  However, I had fun watching it and evaluating it.

I have always been intrigued by yoga, but never had the chance to take a class.  Some yoga instructors (from what I have seen and heard) can be a bit "new-age-y" (is that even a word?) for me.  I wondered how this DVD would rate to what I have seen and heard in the yoga world!  I was actually very pleasantly surprised!

Both stories on the DVD, Condor Trek and Save the Whale, are excellent imagination adventures for your children.  Ahmed takes the kids on wild adventures, teaching them how to use their imagination, while doing yoga poses and exercises.  The kids are so focused on the story, they don't even realize they are getting exercise!  What an awesome concept huh?  The kids get to act like animals and pretend using their imagination.

The first adventure, Condor Trek, is a story about the kids finding Condor eggs and needing to return get them back to their parents before they hatch.  They bike to reach the river, kayak to reach the forest, run to avoid bears, and reach the mountain where the adult Condors are located to return the eggs.  They do encounter a pretend "wizard" but to me, in play/pretend, this is no different than the Lord of the Rings.

The Save the Whale adventure reminds kids the importance of sunscreen during their journey, learn to row boats, avoid crocodiles, and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Overall, I thought this video was very entertaining and a great reference to use to teach your kids many important things!

1) Exercise can be and should be fun!
2) Everyone, regardless of age, can help to save our planet and take better care of what was entrusted to us!
3) The use of your imagination creates a very well-rounded child!

This DVD makes exercise fun to kids because they get to do what they do best at this age: PRETEND.
