For Christmas, my mother-in-law gave me this awesome book ....
My Heart's at Home by Jill Savage (She is actually a Butler University Grad and an Alpha Chi Omega). It's main focus is teach mom's to become the intentional mom her family needs! However, so far, its main purpose has served for great encouragement to me!!
Many times during my two year stint as a (mostly) SAHM/domestic engineer/homemaker, I often struggle to find a sense of accomplishment. Stay at home doesn't give you the same feeling as does clocking out after long day of work where you can say, "I filled 389 prescriptions today and helped counsel many people on their new medication." Here I am with a doctorate degree from a private university staying home raising Sophia. I know it is the right thing for our family right now, and don't get me wrong, I love being home with her and watching her grow, change, learn, and develop and I wouldn't change it for the world .... but sometimes it seems that cooking, cleaning, and playing with baby dolls feels a little under my educational radar. I have often sought out books, words of wisdom, and advice from those that have gone before me! Nothing (until NOW) has ever spoken to the depth of my core as the following poem I am going to type below .... I hope this poem will speak to you (if you are struggling) as it has spoken to my heart!! Please feel free to pass this blog entry along to a friend that could be encouraged!!
She has a chapter titled Mom, Site Manager where she discuss many relevant topics quite meaningful to this SAHM. She touches on the "Very Little Sense of Accomplishment" of motherhood. She says, "By the world's standards, it might not seem as though we have accomplished much. However, the world's standards don't apply to the profession of motherhood. In this profession, the little things are the big things: snuggling an infant, playing peekaboo, changing diapers, nursing, attending tea parties with dolls ..... and on and on .... These are the accomplishments of motherhood. They can't be checked off a list. They don't earn you a raise. They are rarely measurable. BUT THEY MATTER A LOT." (page 157)
She continued by including a poem by Roy Lessin that she hangs on her wall ...

A woman once fretted over the usefulness of her life.
She feared she was wasting her potential being a devoted wife and mother.
She wondered if the time and energy she invested in her husband and children would make a difference. At times she got discouraged because so much of what she did seemed to go unnoticed and unappreciated.
"Is it worth it?" She often wondered.
"Is there something better that I could be doing with my time?"
It was during one of these moments of questioning that she heard the still small voice of her heavenly Father speak to her heart.
"You are a wife and mother because that is what I have called you to be."
Much of what you do is hidden from the public eye.
"But I notice."
Most of what you give is done without remuneration.
"But I am your reward."
Your husband cannot be the man I have called him to be without your support. Your influence upon him is greater than you think and more powerful than you will ever know. I bless him through your service and honor him through your love.
Your children are precious to me.
Even more precious than they are to you.
I have entrusted them to your care to raise for me.
What you invest in them is an offering to me.
You may never be in the public spotlight,
But your obedience shines as a bright light before me.
Continue on. Remember you are MY Servant.
Do all to please me.
